ADJUMANI – The Ministry of Works and Transport has launched emergency maintenance works on the flood-ravaged Adjumani–Sinyanya gravel road, which connects to the critical Obongi Ferry landing site in Ukusijoni Sub-county.
Sections of the road were rendered impassable following heavy rains that swept across the West Nile region, stranding commuters and disrupting essential services.
Allan Ssempebwa, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed the intervention, stating that a station team based in Moyo District is currently on the ground assessing the extent of the damage, grading road surfaces, and restoring clogged drainage systems.
“Our team in Moyo is actively overseeing the maintenance of the Adjumani–Sinyanya road, which was severely damaged due to recent floods,” Ssempebwa said.
“We have activated Road Maintenance Mode, and our crews are working across multiple locations to improve travel conditions.”
The road serves as a vital access route to the Obongi Ferry, which links Adjumani and Obongi districts across the River Nile.
The ferry is crucial for both host communities and refugees, enabling access to markets, schools, and health facilities.
In recent weeks, the poor state of the road has left pregnant mothers, schoolchildren, and traders stranded, raising alarm among local leaders who have long called for a permanent solution.
Ssempebwa acknowledged the recurring nature of flood damage in the region, noting that while the current response is a short-term fix, the Ministry is exploring long-term infrastructure upgrades to make roads more resilient to seasonal flooding.
“We encourage communities to provide feedback and exercise caution during the ongoing works,” he said. “Our broader objective is to deliver safer, all-weather roads—especially in flood-prone areas like West Nile.”
With the rainy season still ongoing, residents expressed hope that the swift repairs will restore access before conditions deteriorate further.
