Police put on the spot over Shs 42 billion

Legislators sitting on the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament have faulted Uganda Police force for failing to account for the Shs 42 billion meant to procure 40 specialised police vehicles and 113 operational vehicles.

According to the legislators, the vehicles were meant to facilitate the operations of the police in the 2016 general elections.

Police's leadership team led by the Accounting Officer Rogers Muhirwa spent the the whole of Wednesday in the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to answer queries raised in the Auditor General’s report for two financial years 2014/15 and 2015/16.

To the committee members Shs 42 billion was received by the Uganda Police to procure 113 operational vehicles but evidence indicates no vehicle was procured.

Efforts by the officials from police to defend the query were futile as they lacked the necessary documents to support their answers on the procurement of vehicles.

The officers also faced the wrath of the committee members on the Shs 21 billion meant to facilitate the training of some police officers.

The officers were also faulted for spending 290 million shillings to pay off 24 ghost pensioners in the Ugandan police.
