The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has called on Ugandans whose National Identification Cards have expired or are about to expire to take advantage of the ongoing mass renewal exercise.
According to Osborn Mushabe, NIRA’s spokesperson, the mass registration exercise is free of charge and will run for about six months. However, it only applies to individuals who are not making changes to their personal information.
“We urge all Ugandans with expired or soon-to-expire IDs to come forward for renewal during this period. The exercise is free, provided no details are being altered,” Mushabe said.
The announcement was made as NIRA conducted a mass registration exercise at Next Media Park, giving staff and members of the public a chance to renew their IDs conveniently.
NIRA says the exercise is part of a broader effort to update the national registry and ensure that Ugandans have valid identification ahead of key national activities, including the 2026 general elections.
Citizens are encouraged to visit designated registration centers across the country or attend outreach programs as they are announced.
