Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called upon Baganda living in the diaspora to prioritise teaching their children the Luganda language, stressing its importance in preserving the cultural identity and traditions of the Buganda Kingdom.
The Katikkiro made the remarks during a press briefing held at Bulange, Mengo, ahead of his official visit to the United States where he is set to attend the highly anticipated Buganda Bumu convention in Boston, Massachusetts.
Established in 2015, the Buganda Bumu initiative was launched by the Kingdom to unite Baganda across the diaspora, particularly in North America, while promoting the rich culture, traditions, and values of Buganda. Held every two years, the convention brings together community members, cultural leaders, and Kingdom officials to discuss matters concerning development, heritage, and unity.
This year, katikkiro Mayiga will officially open the week-long convention, representing Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who has entrusted him with a special message for his subjects in the diaspora.
“The Kabaka values all his subjects, wherever they are in the world, and it is my duty to deliver his message of unity, cultural pride, and continuity,” said the Katikkiro.
He further emphasised that one of the convention’s key goals is to strengthen the use and appreciation of the Luganda language among younger generations, particularly those born and raised abroad.
He expressed concern that many Baganda parents have neglected the responsibility of passing down the language to their children, thereby weakening a vital link to their heritage.
“The Luganda language is a cornerstone of our identity as Baganda. Without it, we risk losing the essence of who we are. I urge all parents in the diaspora to take this responsibility seriously,” he stated.
The Katikkiro also noted that he plans to hold engagements with young people during his visit, especially those who may have been influenced by negative narratives about the Kingdom. He stressed the importance of fostering an informed and constructive understanding of Buganda’s leadership and traditions.
“As a Kingdom, we are committed to engaging with our youth everywhere to ensure they remain connected to their roots and have a clear, truthful understanding of the throne and its purpose,” he added.
The Buganda Bumu convention is expected to draw hundreds of attendees from across the U.S. and beyond, all united by a common desire to celebrate and preserve their Buganda heritage.
The Katikkiro’s visit underscores the Kingdom’s continued efforts to engage with its people globally and promote cultural pride, unity, and development across generations.
