Uganda has the potential to grow faster than many of its neighboring countries, but this can only be achieved if we elect leaders who are competent and committed to serving the people

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has met with independent aspirants contesting for various national and local government positions, urging voters to elect leaders who are principled, capable, and committed to the development of both Buganda and Uganda as a whole.

The meeting held at the Buganda Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo on Tuesday brought together candidates vying for parliamentary seats, mayoral positions, District Chairperson roles, and councillorships at different levels of leadership across the country.

In his remarks, Mayiga emphasized the importance of electing leaders who respect the Kabaka, uphold the cultural values of Buganda, and possess strong dialogue and leadership skills. He called for leaders who are courageous enough to stand against oppression and who can effectively champion policies and ideas that promote national development.

“Uganda has the potential to grow faster than many of its neighboring countries, but this can only be achieved if we elect leaders who are competent and committed to serving the people,” he said.

Mayiga further highlighted the critical role of local government leaders, noting that communities need representatives who understand local challenges and are willing to articulate and prioritize those issues at decision-making levels.

On behalf of the aspirants, Former Kawempe North Member of Parliament and Kawempe Division mayor aspirant, Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo; Kalungu East Member of Parliament, Francis Katabaazi; and Phina Mugerwa reaffirmed their commitment to constructive leadership.

They stressed that the current focus should be on building and strengthening Buganda rather than engaging in actions that divide or weaken it. They also urged voters to carefully select leaders who are disciplined, knowledgeable, and morally upright.

The Kingdom of Buganda also appealed to all registered voters to actively participate in the electoral process by turning up to vote peacefully. Citizens were encouraged to observe electoral laws, maintain calm, and uphold fairness to ensure credible and peaceful elections.

With just a day left to the general presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for Thursday, 15th January 2026; Mayiga reiterated that leadership rooted in understanding community needs and prioritizing public interest

is essential for Uganda’s growth and stability.

“Elections are near. We need leaders who understand the realities of the communities they seek to lead and are ready to place those needs at the forefront,” he said.
