The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has commenced a six-day training for a total of 284 enumerators at Collins Hotel in Mukono, marking a crucial step in the preparations for the Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025 data collection.
While opening the Training session, the acting Executive Director UBOS Dr. Vincent Fred Ssenono representing the Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza called upon enumerators to work together to ensure successful data collection.
He urged them showcase professionalism and maximum discipline while in the field.
Dr.Ssenono noted that the aquaculture census comes at a time when there is a lot of data demands and, therefore, it is only important that the Enumerators exhibit excellent data collection skills to guarantee data quality.
This, he said, will enhance dissemination of aquaculture census findings in real time.
This training aims to equip the selected field personnel with the skills and knowledge required to conduct the census effectively and collect high-quality data on the aquaculture sector across the country.
The training is being facilitated by a skilled and technical team who previously underwent a comprehensive training of trainers (TOTs) program held earlier at the Jinja Nile Resort Hotel.
The session’s focus is on building the enumerators’ capacity in the data collection tools, methodologies, use of digital tools, and adherence to ethical standards and best practices in statistical data collection.
Upon completion, the trained enumerators will be will take an oath of office and secrecy as standard principle to ensure confidentiality and, thereafter, they will be deployed nationwide to commence data collection for the Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025.
The census seeks to generate comprehensive and accurate data on the aquaculture sector in Uganda.
It will provide essential statistics on the: number of aquaculture farms, production levels, technologies and system types, socio-economic data on operators and environmental impact on aquaculture.
The census will be conducted in all districts in Uganda where there is presence of aquaculture. The farms include: fish ponds, fish pens, fish cages, fish tanks, and small farm reservoirs.
UBOS is working with the local government officials especially the district planners and district fishery officers, to ensure complete coverage of all the aquaculture establishments across the country.
This exercise reinforces UBOS’ mandate as the national statistics office responsible for coordinating, monitoring and supervision of the National Statistical System (NSS).
By collecting and producing accurate and timely data, the Bureau enables evidence-based planning, policy making, and resource allocation across all sectors of the economy.
The Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025 is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF).
The results will provide essential insights to support sector growth, food security, and economic development.
