Government Licences 13 New Children Homes

The Children and Youth Minister, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi has today licensed 13 new children homes with strict guidelines to follow.

While handing over the licenses to the operators of the children homes today in Kampala, Nakiwala cautioned them against using the homes as transit centers to traffic children or even use these places to transact illegal activities in the guise of protecting children as well as provide better health centers to offer treatment for the kids.

David Waiswa, the legal expert at Home of Hope located in Jinja on behalf of the 13 newly licensed children homes pledges to follow the laws that regulate the operation of children homes in the country.

Among the homes licensed include, Tooro babies home (Fort Portal), Good Home Children’s Home(Lira), Tiger Light House and Tubabuja Light house Children’s homes both in Kampala, Lira Babies Home among others and all these facilities are required to house not more than 50 kids.

97 children homes had applied for the license and only 13 emerged successful. This also follows the closure of 153 homes which did not meet the required standards.
