As part of the ongoing celebrations to mark his 70th birthday Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has made a significant contribution to the agricultural sector by donating tractors to the kingdom’s 18 counties (masaza).
The tractors were officially handed over by the kingdom’s Prime Minister (Katikkiro), Charles Peter Mayiga, during a colorful ceremony held at Bulange Mengo.
The Katikkiro, while addressing the gathering, emphasized the Kabaka’s passionate call for the proper care and use of these machines to help restore Buganda’s rich agricultural heritage.
“The Kabaka wants every homestead to have enough food. That’s why he encourages his subjects to embrace modern agriculture. That is how the Kingdom shall reclaim its top position,” Mayiga stated.
He further urged farmers to adopt modern technologies such as mechanized farming and irrigation to increase productivity and ensure food security for all.
The Katikkiro also pointed out that despite limited government support, the Kingdom had taken it upon itself to invest in agricultural equipment for the betterment of its people.
“We decided to buy our own tractors because our calls for government support have not yielded positive results. However, we encourage you to handle these farm inputs with great care,” he stressed.
Hajji Amiisi Kakomo, the Minister in charge of Trade, Agriculture, and Cooperatives in Buganda Kingdom, announced the formation of oversight committees in each county to ensure transparency, accountability, and the tractors’ proper utilization.
In addition, Edward Ssenkindu, representing the Board Chairperson of BUKADEF (Buganda Kingdom Development Foundation), revealed that tractor operators and caretakers have undergone specialized training and a comprehensive maintenance plan has been established.
Speaking on behalf of county chiefs, Prince Ronald Mulondo, the county chief for Bulemeezi , expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Kabaka for his continuous support and for empowering communities through impactful development initiatives.
Following the tractor handover, the Katikkiro proceeded to the Kabaka’s palace in Mengo, where he met with youth leaders from across Buganda. The youth presented birthday gifts, known as Amakula, to the Kabaka in honor of his milestone birthday.
The Katikkiro lauded the youth for their loyalty, commitment, and active participation in community development, encouraging them to steer clear of HIV/AIDS and remain dedicated to their education and personal growth.
Robert Serwanga, the Minister for Youth and Talent Development, also addressed the youth, urging them to embrace hard work, innovation, and unity, noting that Buganda’s future rests in their hands.
The celebration continues as Buganda marks the 70th birthday of its beloved monarch, with this latest initiative seen as a landmark moment in the Kingdom’s efforts to modernize agriculture and promote food sufficiency.
