Leaders in Kween District are demanding accountability for Shs 150 million allocated for rehabilitating the 11-kilometer Kapkworor road.
Despite the release of funds and the deployment of road equipment, only two kilometers were worked on before the machinery was withdrawn, raising concerns about the project’s transparency.
Kaproron Sub-county Chairperson Charles Sam Chebet expressed his dissatisfaction, calling on district authorities for an explanation.
“I am requesting the district authorities to account for these funds. We were promised first-class marram, but nothing has been delivered,” Chebet stated.
Similarly, Grace Yariwo, a district councilor and Secretary for Gender in Kween District, accused the district technical team of deception.
“When we inquired, authorities claimed the money was exhausted. However, during a roads committee meeting, no accountability was presented. We have given the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) 10 days to explain,” Yariwo revealed.
The leaders argue that this is not the first instance of alleged resource mismanagement, warning that the trend is hampering service delivery in the district.
“Service delivery in Kween is failing. The rainy season is setting in, yet road construction equipment is idle while most of our roads remain impassable,” lamented Joseph Chebenet, another district councilor.
With the deteriorating road network affecting transportation and access to essential services, the leaders warn they will not remain passive.
“We are planning a peaceful demonstration over this road. We demand accountability. Some women have even lost their lives due to its poor condition,” Chebet declared.
The councilors accuse authorities of mismanaging funds and insist that without a clear explanation, they will escalate their grievances through peaceful protests.
Given Kween District’s challenging terrain, poor road infrastructure has long been a concern, with many feeder roads in dire condition.
The leaders are urging the government to intensify supervision of road projects to ensure proper use of funds and improved service delivery.
