The Electoral Commission has officially gazetted Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the Kawempe North Member of Parliament-elect, ending 11 days of tension in the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP ) camp.
This follows the publication of his victory in the Uganda Gazette on March 24, 2025, confirming his win in the recent parliamentary by-election.
Nalukoola emerged as the top contender with 17,939 votes, defeating other candidates, including Faridah Nambi of the ruling National Resistance Movement, who garnered 9,058 votes.
Ms Nambi's tally is a revision from the initial figure of 8,593 that was originally tallied under her ballot on March 13.
The official gazette publication clears the way for Nalukoola's swearing-in and his formal entry into Parliament.
This development comes after days of uncertainty regarding the delay in the gazetting process, which had prompted Nalukoola to threaten to storm the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) for an explanation.
Nalukoola's concerns were addressed after a meeting with the Electoral Commission, which confirmed that his details had been sent to UPPC for publication.
The gazetting of Nalukoola’s victory follows his earlier calls for the withdrawal of UPDF soldiers from Kawempe North, accusing them of intimidation and interference in the election process.
Despite these tensions, the publication marks a crucial step in formalizing his position as the new MP for Kawempe North.
The Electoral Commission chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama, has now officially concluded the electoral process, with the full list of results for the Kawempe North by-election published in the Gazette.
This news clears the way for Nalukoola's eventual swearing-in as an MP, marking a significant moment in Uganda's political landscape.
