Airtel Uganda has launched a nationwide campaign, A Network for Digital Acceleration, aimed at strengthening digital connectivity and supporting economic and social development across the country.
The campaign began in Lira City, where Airtel introduced five new network sites to enhance connectivity in the region.
David Birungi, Airtel Uganda’s Public Relations Manager, said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to transform the country’s digital landscape.
“This campaign highlights the role of Airtel in accelerating Uganda’s digital journey. We are investing ahead of time to ensure businesses, students, and health facilities have seamless connectivity,” Birungi said.
He noted that Lira’s growth and increasing business operations necessitate a robust network to meet demand. “This launch is just the beginning; we will be rolling out similar improvements nationwide,” he added.
Muthiya Wongani, the Sales and Distribution Director for Growth Markets, who represented Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, emphasized the impact of the new sites.
“We believe these sites will enhance network experience and provide access to our digital products. More importantly, they will serve as mobilization hubs for seed oil and cereal farmers, driving economic growth,” Wongani said.
In partnership with UNICEF, Airtel Uganda has also connected four secondary schools in the greater Lango region to the internet.
These include Acaba SS, Otwal SS, Iceme Girls Secondary School, and Amwa Comprehensive Secondary School.
Birungi said the initiative aims to equip students with digital skills and support research-based learning under the new national curriculum.
“With reliable internet, students and teachers can access educational resources, conduct research, and enhance academic performance. We are building the next generation of human resources for Uganda,” he said.
Lira City Deputy Mayor Rebecca Alwedo Ogole welcomed the initiative, noting that internet access remains a challenge for some residents.
“Sometimes we struggle with connectivity, data costs, and maintaining access to digital services. This campaign could offer a much-needed solution,” she said.
Ogole urged Airtel to engage businesses and youth in leveraging the improved digital infrastructure.
“As we launch today, we need to ensure that more business owners come on board. Schools involved in these programs will also play a key role in expanding digital literacy, as students share their knowledge within their communities,” she said.
She also emphasized the need for youth development programs, including resource centers and innovation hubs, to create more opportunities for young people.
“Young people are inquisitive and eager to explore. With better internet access, we are expanding opportunities for them in education, healthcare, and business,” Ogole added.
Airtel Uganda plans to expand the A Network for Digital Acceleration campaign nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure to drive innovation and economic growth.
