President Museveni Meets Acholi Opposition MPs

President Yoweri Museveni met a section of opposition MPs from the Acholi sub-region on Thursday evening, emphasizing the need for a non-tribal approach to politics focused on national interests rather than identity.
In a statement on his X handle, Museveni reiterated his long-held stance on politics driven by common interests.
“We have been saying all this time that the correct ideology, if we want prosperity for our people, is that of promoting the politics of interests and not identity. I am therefore very happy that the leaders of Acholi from various political parties visited me today and reaffirmed their commitment to working with the government to get our people out of poverty. We shall study their memorandum and continue with this dialogue. I welcome them,” Museveni stated.
The meeting comes days after Nile Post reported that NRM-leaning independent MPs plan to engage the government on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ahead of elections.
Key issues raised include war debts, compensation for claimants, poverty alleviation, and agricultural development.
While the MoU has sparked mixed reactions among the public, with some speculating that the MPs are preparing to join the NRM, those involved have framed it as a move to enhance cooperation for the region’s development.
Leading the delegation at State House was Kilak North MP Anthony Akol, who recently joined the NRM at an event in Amuru District, presided over by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
Other opposition MPs present included Chua West MP Okin Ojara (People’s Progressive Party), Aruu North MP Santa Okot, Torchi County MP Okot Peter, Gulu City Woman MP Aol Betty Ochan, and Amuru District Woman MP Lucy Akello.
The MPs were accompanied by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and Reserve Force Commander Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany.
A 28-page document outlining the Acholi opposition MPs’ demands for working with the NRM government has been submitted for review. As indicated in Museveni’s statement, the MoU will be studied and harmonized for further engagement.
