He noted the party’s successes over the years while urging members to reflect on challenges and lessons learned as the country heads into another election season.

Mawanda’s decision to contest follows guidance from PLU Chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who encouraged members to participate in NRM internal elections through the party’s official structures.

He reiterated that PLU remains a civic organization, not a political party, but shares values with NRM.

“Gen. Muhoozi encouraged us to engage in NRM elections. There is no contradiction in being part of PLU while seeking leadership within the ruling party,” Mawanda stated.

Despite an ongoing court case, Mawanda remains focused on his campaign, dismissing allegations against him as politically motivated.

“We remain steadfast in our mission. This matter is before the courts, and we maintain our innocence,” he said.

His candidacy adds momentum to the race for the NRM CEC Western Uganda seat, currently held by Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of ICT and National Guidance. Mawanda will also face competition from Workers’ MP Arinaitwe Rwakajara, who had earlier expressed interest in the position.

With the election season approaching, Mawanda’s bid is set to energize the NRM Western Uganda leadership race, bringing fresh perspectives and renewed focus on party unity and grassroots mobilization.
