Accompanied by Buganda officials, including Dr. Anthony Wamala, the Minister of Culture, Heritage, Security, and the official responsible for the Royal Tombs, Mayiga confirmed that the restoration process is progressing well and the tombs will soon be reopened to the public.
"We still have a few crucial developments to work on, especially in areas where we must adhere to norms and traditions," Mayiga explained.
Among the remaining tasks, Mayiga highlighted the paving of the compound, the installation of toilets, lighting, and the construction of a parking area.
He urged the public to remain patient as they work toward creating a site that will attract more tourists both locally and internationally.
“We want to have a standard structure that will enhance the attraction of the site for both local and foreign visitors,” Mayiga added.
Nalinnya Beatrice Namikka, who heads the caretakers at the Kasubi Tombs, expressed gratitude for the support of the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and Katikkiro Mayiga in the restoration process.
“We are happy that very soon, we will have the structures of our late kings in place. The memories of the Kasubi Tombs are invaluable to us,” Namikka said.
The Kasubi Tombs was gutted by fire on March 16, 2010, under mysterious circumstances, and the restoration has taken over a decade.
The reopening of the tombs is eagerly awaited, not only for cultural significance but also for its potential to boost tourism and preserve Buganda’s rich heritage.
