The graduating class included 65 officers from the Uganda Military Academy, Kabamba, who were awarded Bachelor’s Degrees in Defence Studies, and 19 senior officers from the Senior Command and Staff College, Kimaka, who earned Master of Arts Degrees in Defence and Security Studies.

Eighty-four officers of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) have graduated from Makerere University with advanced qualifications in Defence and Security Studies, marking another milestone in the professionalisation of Uganda’s military.

The graduating class included 65 officers from the Uganda Military Academy, Kabamba (UMA-K), who were awarded Bachelor’s Degrees in Defence Studies, and 19 senior officers from the Senior Command and Staff College, Kimaka (SCSC), who earned Master of Arts Degrees in Defence and Security Studies.

Speaking at a luncheon organised for the UMA-K graduates, Brig Gen Richard Karemire, representing the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, commended the officers for their dedication and hard work.

Brig Gen Karemire emphasised the critical role education plays in enhancing military professionalism and urged the officers to remain steadfast in safeguarding the peace and security the UPDF has fought to establish.

“Your academic achievements not only open doors to new opportunities but also strengthen the foundation of a professional and capable military,” Brig Gen Karemire remarked.

Col Mark Mugarura, Chief Instructor at UMA-K, praised the UPDF leadership for prioritising education within the ranks, describing it as a transformative initiative that boosts individual competence and elevates the army’s overall standards.

The graduates expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UPDF leadership for facilitating their academic advancement, recognising its importance in fostering personal and professional growth.

Dr. Justus Twesigye, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Makerere University, congratulated the officers on their achievements and highlighted the indispensable role of education in fortifying national security.

The luncheon was graced by several senior military officials, including Col Saad Katemba, Director of Training Land Force, and the Deputy Director of Defence Public Information, alongside other dignitaries.

This initiative underscores the UPDF’s commitment to continuous learning and professional development as key pillars of its mission to serve and protect Uganda effectively.
