The National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) and China Railway Seventh Group (CRSG) Joint Venture have made significant strides in the emergency restoration of the Karuma Bridge project, which nears completion.
The most critical transportation artery connecting Kampala to Northern Uganda, the project, valued in billions, is a testament to engineering expertise and Uganda's commitment to revitalizing its national roads network.
The bridge is set to be reopened to traffic on Friday.
Contracted by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), the joint venture has worked tirelessly to restore the 1963-built bridge to its former glory.
The project's scope included demolition and reconstruction of the bridge deck system, retrofitting of foundation and structural elements, milling and waterproofing, accident mitigation measures, and an asphalt concrete overlay.
“Our expertise in bridge construction and rehabilitation has been instrumental in overcoming unforeseen challenges. The project's complexity required innovative solutions, which our team has delivered,” said Assistant Manager MA.
The Karuma Bridge restoration project has also created employment opportunities for local residents and stimulated economic growth in the region.
"This project has been a game-changer for some of us in this community," said a local resident. "We're grateful for the jobs and infrastructure development it has brought through the NEC and CRSG Joint Venture."
UNRA's collaboration with NEC and CRSG has been fruitful, with the project nearing completion ahead of schedule. Speaking to an official from UNRA, the official told Nile Post that they are exceptionally happy with the quality of work delivered.
"We're impressed with the contractor's work quality and commitment to safety," said the UNRA official.
The restored Karuma Bridge will enhance Uganda's transportation network, facilitating the movement of goods and people. "This project demonstrates our commitment to developing Uganda's infrastructure and boosting economic growth," said the official.
With the Karuma Bridge restoration project nearing completion, Uganda's economy is poised to benefit from improved infrastructure and increased connectivity. Karuma Bridge is just days away from reopening after months of challenges for travelers heading north, a testament to the positive collaboration between NEC and CRSG.
From the site engineer, a huge milestone has been achieved so far since September. This includes: demolition of the existing bridge deck system (100% completed), reconstruction of the bridge deck (100% completed), installation of elastomeric bearings procured from China, approach slab treatment, joint and bolt checks, and the installation of new bridge guardrail steel posts and railings.
Scarification of the defective approach roads is ongoing, with an asphalt concrete overlay planned for next week.
Set for opening before December 25, 2024, the restored Karuma Bridge will bring smiles to the faces of travelers from northern Uganda.
