The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has concluded its 52nd anniversary celebrations with a grand event that brought together prominent Islamic scholars and leaders from across Africa.
Originally planned for 2022 to mark 50 years since its establishment in 1972 by former President Idi Amin Dada, the celebrations were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The long-awaited festivities culminated in an inspiring sermon by renowned Indian Islamic scholar and comparative religion expert, Sheikh Dr. Zakir Naik, who was visiting East Africa for the first time.
Dr. Naik commended Ugandan Muslims for their steadfast support of the UMSC over the past five decades, highlighting the resilience and unity that have sustained the Council’s achievements.
During his sermon, Dr. Naik focused on the similarities between Islam and Christianity, urging people to look to their holy scriptures rather than individuals as a source of religious understanding.
“Recognising and respecting shared values in our scriptures fosters harmony and peaceful coexistence,” he emphasised.
The celebrations also attracted Muslim leaders from across the African continent, including muftis and representatives from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Somaliland, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, the Central African Republic, Egypt, and Madagascar.
The presence of these leaders underscored the regional and international significance of the UMSC, which continues to play a critical role in uniting Muslims in Uganda and fostering interfaith dialogue.
This historic milestone highlighted the Council’s enduring commitment to the social, spiritual, and educational development of the Muslim community while celebrating its resilience and ability to overcome challenges, including the global pandemic.
