The rehabilitation of the 14.3-kilometre Kabujogera-Ruhunga road in Kitagwenda District has sparked significant economic transformation, benefiting local businesses and communities.
Completed at a cost of Shs200 million, the upgraded road has improved transportation, facilitating better access to markets, healthcare, and schools.
After 15 years of neglect, the district undertook the refurbishment project in July 2024 through its Works Department, aiming to revitalize the region’s connectivity and enhance trade.
The previously poor state of the road had long been a source of frustration for local farmers and traders, making it nearly impossible to transport goods.
Jane Kansiime, a farmer from Kabujogera, expressed her relief: “The road was in a terrible state, making it difficult for us to transport our produce to markets. Now, with the improved road, we can easily access markets in neighboring districts, increasing our sales and income.”
Before the upgrade, travel between Kabujogera and Ruhunga could take up to an hour due to the road’s rough terrain, full of stones and potholes.
The new road has drastically reduced travel time to just 30 minutes, benefitting residents and traders alike.
Scovia Keneema, the District Superintendent of Works, noted, "We're witnessing a remarkable transformation. The road’s upgrade has made it easier for traders to access markets, which is key to boosting local economic growth."
Local businesses have seen a surge in sales thanks to the improved infrastructure. John Kamukama, a wholesaler in Ruhunga, highlighted the benefits: "Since the road was completed, I've noticed an increase in sales. Traders from neighboring sub-counties now find it easier to reach us, which has boosted our customer base."
The road’s rehabilitation has not only facilitated trade but has also attracted new investments to the area. Joseph Twesigye, a coffee farmer in Ruhunga, announced plans to establish a coffee milling plant in Kabujogera, attributing his decision to the road’s upgrade.
"The improved road was a key factor in our decision, ensuring efficient transportation of raw materials and finished products," he explained.
For residents, the benefits extend beyond business. The improved accessibility to schools and healthcare services has greatly enhanced daily life.
Rose Najuna, a resident of Ruhunga, expressed her gratitude: “My children can now easily travel to school, and I can access healthcare services in nearby towns without the delays we used to face.”
Kitagwenda District Chairperson, Ismail Mushemeza, emphasized the road’s importance in promoting economic growth during a phone interview with the Nile Post.
“The rehabilitation of the Kabujogera-Ruhunga road is part of our efforts to enhance trade and connectivity within the district. Our goal is to elevate everyone from poverty to at least middle income,” he stated.
As trade and investment continue to grow, the once-remote Kabujogera and Ruhunga regions are transforming into thriving economic hubs.
The road has not only revitalized the local economy but also provided new hope for the people of Kitagwenda, demonstrating how critical infrastructure development can drive progress and development.
