Uganda has confirmed 108 Mpox cases across 16 districts, prompting a collaborative response with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ministry of Health Uganda (MoH), and partners to contain the outbreak.
The Contingency Fund for Emergencies has been utilised to enhance coordination, surveillance, case management, laboratory capacity, and community engagement in affected areas.
Key districts such as Kampala, Wakiso, and Luweero have seen higher case numbers, and response teams are actively involved in improving case identification and contact tracing.
The Ministry of Health has emphasised preventive measures, urging citizens to avoid direct contact with infected individuals, practice good hygiene, and seek medical attention if symptoms like fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes arise. Vaccination efforts targeting high-risk groups, including healthcare workers, are underway to curb transmission.
WHO's support includes reinforcing laboratory networks to ensure prompt diagnostics and effective management of cases, aiming to mitigate the outbreak's impact.
The situation in Uganda also highlights regional concerns, as Mpox cases have surfaced in neighbouring countries. WHO is collaborating with East African governments to strengthen regional health security frameworks and prepare for potential cross-border transmission.
The organisation's commitment, backed by the Contingency Fund for Emergencies, aims to prevent the outbreak from escalating further and to protect public health across the region.
