The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has deployed its Fourth Aviation Component to reinforce peacekeeping operations in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS).
This latest deployment will replace the Third Aviation Component, which has just concluded a successful year-long mission.
The launch of the Fourth Aviation Component took place at the Soroti Air Force Wing and was officiated by Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Lt Gen Muhanga emphasized the importance of discipline and physical fitness in military operations.
“Achieving excellence requires unwavering discipline and a commitment to regular physical training,” he said, highlighting the need for maintaining health and readiness in challenging environments like Somalia.
Maj Gen David Isimbwa, deputy commander of the Air Force, represented the Commander Air Force at the event.
He commended the troops for their dedication during training and expressed confidence in their ability to perform during the upcoming mission.
“Your dedication during training will serve you well as you embark on this important task,” Maj Gen Isimbwa remarked.
The Fourth Aviation Component will be led by Col Solomon Andiandu, with Lt Col Pascal Bariine serving as his deputy.
This unit, which has been actively supporting peacekeeping operations in Somalia since its initial deployment on October 15, 2020, plays a vital role in providing airlift capabilities for troop movements, logistics, and medical evacuations.
A unit is about the size of a battalion but for aircraft, it is in terms of planes deployed.
Several senior officials attended the ceremony, including Brig Gen Richard Rubongoya, Director of Human Resource Management for the Air Force, along with other distinguished military personnel.
The deployment is expected to further strengthen Uganda's contribution to peace and stability efforts in Somalia.
