Rotary Clubs across Districts 9213 and 9314, led by the Rotary Club of Kitezi, have initiated a significant relief effort to support survivors of the recent landslide in Kiteezi.
The tragedy, which struck near the Kiteezi landfill, has left the community reeling from loss and devastation, with at least 15 confirmed dead and dozens more injured or displaced.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rains, buried several homes and displaced over 200 residents, plunging the area into a dire humanitarian crisis.
Many families are now left without shelter, basic necessities, or access to clean water, exacerbating an already precarious situation near the overcrowded landfill, which has long posed environmental and health risks to the local community.
During a handover ceremony, Julie Janet Kariisa, President of the Rotary Club of Kampala Kibuli, emphasized the urgent needs of the affected community.
“We are here to offer our support to those impacted by the landslide, and we call upon all Ugandans to contribute to these ongoing efforts,” Kariisa stated.

ms, which included mattresses, blankets, jerry cans, and food, were distributed in partnership with the Red Cross and the Office of the Prime Minister.
Ms Kariisa noted that this was just the first batch of support, with more aid expected in the coming days.
Speaking on behalf of the Rotary Club of Kiteezi, the club's president expressed gratitude to the participating clubs and urged continued support for the victims.
“We will keep returning with more assistance as long as the need persists,” she assured.
The humanitarian mission comes at a critical time as the affected community struggles to recover from the devastation.
Among the beneficiaries was a mother with a two-week-old baby, who received much-needed bedding.
The relief effort aims to provide immediate support and foster long-term recovery for the survivors.
Rotary Clubs and their partners are committed to ensuring that the donated items reach those in need and are used effectively to help the community rebuild.
With numerous families still unaccounted for and the threat of further landslides looming, the situation remains dire, underscoring the urgent need for ongoing support and resources.
