Uganda Women Writers Association(FEMRITE) has unveiled a significant initiative to secure a sustainable future for its activities including the construction of a writing and wellness centre.
This project, a long-held dream of the organization, is now being brought to the forefront with a comprehensive fundraising campaign.
A vision realized for over two decades, FEMRITE has played a crucial role in mentoring and inspiring both male and female writers.
Initially focused on Ugandan women, the organization has expanded its reach globally, contributing to the development and visibility of writers worldwide.
Recognizing the need for a permanent home to support its growing activities, FEMRITE is now set on building a centre that will include a training hall, a wellness den of wisdom room, writing retreat lodging, and an administrative block.
The total initial estimated cost for this project is approximately shs500 million.
Executive Director Hilda Twongyeirwe emphasized the therapeutic power of writing and reading.
“Writing and reading are not only for literary purposes but also for healing and mental wellness.”
This philosophy is embodied in the 'Den of wisdom' a cherished reading room at FEMRITE’s current office, which Twongyeirwe believes should have a permanent home.
To launch the fundraising campaign, FEMRITE has organised an inspiring flagship event; a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro.
This iconic mountain, symbolizing strength, unity, and humility, will serve as the backdrop for this endeavour.
Ms Twongyeirwe, along with the founders' team, will lead the climb to Uhuru the highest peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Mary Karooro Okurut, the founding mother of FEMRITE, expressed her heartfelt support for the initiative.
She highlighted the organization's journey and its unwavering commitment to literary excellence.
“Probably when we started gathering the first women in 1994, we did not realize that the organization would still be here 30 years later. This demonstrates that FEMRITE has not outgrown its usefulness,” she remarked.
Twongyeirwe echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the power of community in realizing this dream.
“Every coin matters. We earn differently and have different financial obligations, but when we all give, it makes a big difference. Today, we embrace the power of community giving and call upon our supporters, partners, friends, and families to support the cause of building this writing legacy.”
The initiative is not just about constructing a building; it’s about creating a nurturing environment where writers can develop their craft, readers can find solace, and the community can unite through a shared love of literature.
FEMRITE's writing and wellness centre will provide a space where writing clinics, recitals, writing appraisals, research, and publications can be undertaken effectively.
“Actualizing the centre will strengthen the sustainability base of the organization, giving it life beyond us, so that even the children of our children can find it and do their duty in maintaining or transforming it to match their times,” said Twongyeirwe.
