Traffic police in Hoima city have started an operation to crack down on motorists riding and driving in the city without licenses and helmets among other requirements on the road.
The operation saw traffic police mount roadblocks where vehicles and motorcyclists were stopped and asked to present the required documents and those defaulting were issued with express penalty tickets
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson said the operations will continue for many days.
"When we are on the highways, people in the city drive the way they want, so now staging at UNRA offices is so strategic as people from either sides dont see us. They just land into us and can't turn back. All we want is to ensure people adhere to the traffic guidelines. Having a helmet for motorcyclists and up to date driving permit is a must. Those loading excess passengers will also not survive," Hakiza said.
He said defaulters are given express penalty tickets which they must first pay before their vehicles are released.
"We are not compromising. You have only one option, Have all the traffic requirements or we fine you. If you don't have money I can assure you, that vehicle or motor cycle will go to police until you pay."
