Michael Mawanda and Mudimi Wamakuyu are expected to appear before CID in Kibuli today

Kilak South MP Gilbert Olanya has said the arrest of legislators from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is a wakeup call for them to feel for the Opposition members who are always being arrested by security personnel.

Mr Olanya, from the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change, says whenever it has happened to members from their side of the political divide, NRM colleagues have ignored their cries.

"The situation is quite hot in parliament," he said.

"You can see the guilty ones moving in Parliament, making calls and jumping up and down."

Mr Olanya, who was appearing on the NBS Morning Breeze programme on Thursday, said it has been long overdue since the only arrests that were done in Parliament affected opposition.

"We used to raise in Parliament about how MPs were being arrested and our colleagues in NRM used to say we in the opposition aren't serious," he said.

Five legislators are on remand after being slapped with corruption-related offences.

Lwengo Woman MP Cissy Namujju, Bunyole East MP Yusuf Mutembuli, and Busiki County MP Paul Akamba were charged with soliciting a 20 percent kickback from the budget of the Human Rights Commission.

Michael Mawanda of Igara East and Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu of Elgon County were also sent to prison over charges of embezzling war loss compensation from cooperative unions.
