ULS Accuses Mao of Tampering With Judicial Independence
The Uganda Law Society has accused the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Norbert Mao of tampering with the independence of the Judiciary.
In a statement issued by the society on Tuesday Morning, signed by President Bernard Oundo, the law society pins Minister Mao for tampering with a court order after he directed the Acting Assistant Inspector General of Police to restore a pre-existing status quo by placing Mr Francis Ishanga back into possession of a disputed property contrally to a preexisting court order that has been varied or set aside.

"We therefore caution the police and other government agencies to agencies against implementing unlawful directives from of the Hon Minister and advise the aggrieved parties to instead seek legal procedures pertaining review or appeal in courts," said ULS in their statement.
Uganda Law Society's criticism of Minister Mao is about a certain Civil suit No. 22 of 2024 Francis Ishanga and others Vs Kellen Karemeera and two others.
The Judicial Independence Controversy:
Uganda Law Society has on several occasions opened its criticism on various indicators of distortion of Judicial independence, especially by members of the executive and Judiciary's top management.
This criticism of Minister Mao adds itself to the recent criticism of Justice Byaruhanga's handling of Total Energies and Tilenga Oils land impasse, which bred their attempt to hold an extraordinary conference that was instantly aborted by the court.
The Law Society also vehemently criticised President Museveni's intervention in the Court of Appeal's verdict on the sale of Muslim Property case when he (Museveni) wrote to the Chief Justice imploring the Judiciary to 'exhibit commonsense'
The Law Society also criticised the Principal Judge's letter to the head of the Commercial Division of the High Court, Justice Stephen Mubiru, barring him from hearing more cases until he expedited what was already on his table.
