Concerns have risen among residents and leaders of Muhanga town council in Rukiga district following poor garbage disposal that is likely to cause an outbreak of waterborne diseases.
The land which had been secured by the town council for disposal of garbage was claimed by one Bernard Mbabazi who said it belonged to his family and consequently dragged the town council to courts of law.
This has seen the town council being without any place for proper disposal of garbage.
When our reporter visited the town council, she found garbage being dumped everywhere including trenches.
Obed Kyeyene a resident in Muhanga town council says that as residents they have been asking themselves if the council has land for garbage disposal, noting that they are worried of an outbreak of diseases like Cholera and dysentery.
Kyeyene put the blame on the town council for failure to gazette place for garbage disposal.
Francis Biryabarema says that the reason locals dump garbage in trenches is because the town council lacks a specific area for garbage disposal.
However, Elijah Tumwebaze, one of the leaders said they were initially using other people's land to dispose garbage, a practice that they abandoned.
He however noted that there are high chances of an outbreak of waterborne diseases in the area due to poor disposal of garbage.
Twijukye James, the mayor Muhanga town council confirmed that garbage disposal is a challenge since they don't have enough public land in town adding that most of the public land is far away from the town.
He added that whenever they try to secure any space for disposal,the owners start raising complaints ,adding that the town council decided to hire a truck every week to ferry garbage.
Twijukye said as leaders, they are working hard to keep the town council clean.
