Vipers lose as Villa, KCCA win in UPL

Two goals by Hood Kaweesa and Ben Ocen, five minutes apart ensured Police FC condemned  Kitende based Vipers Sports Club to their  first defeat of the season in the Azam Uganda Premier League on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead through Milton Kariisa in the 53rd minute but the Cops restored sanity 20 minutes later through Hood Kaweesa.

The now energized Police team made a number of numerous attacks and in the 78th minute scored the second, thanks to a Ben Ocen strike that threw their players and supporters into frenzy at Namboole stadium.

Speaking shortly after the game, Police FC coach Abudallah Mubiru said despite his team struggling against their visitors on Saturday afternoon, they regained confidence after recess and were able to bag all the three points .

“It was not easy in the first half because they(Vipers) changed the team we anticipated they would field but in the second half, my boys played their game and we beat them,” Mubiru said of the Vipers team that started without stars including Tom Masiko, Erisa Ssekisambu and Tonny Odur.

Asked whether the win against Vipers was a big boost for his team that is aiming at finishing at the top of the league at the end of the season, Mubiru said his goal this season would be fighting relegation.

“We are not thinking of winning the league but trying to finish in a better position than we did last season when we struggled. We probably can be among the top teams in the league.”

However, the Vipers assistant coach, Edward Golola, blamed his players for the defeat against Police.

“In the second half we made a lot of mistakes. All goals were due to mistakes because after leading the game, the players thought it was done and relaxed,”Golola said.

He was however optimistic his team will improve in their next game.

KCCA,Villa win

Meanwhile at Kakindu stadium, defending champions KCCA FC won their second game of the season, beating home side BUL FC three goals to one.

The home side took the lead through Richard Wandyaka on the 18th minute mark but the Lugogo based side levelled the matters four minutes later, thanks to a Paul Mucureezi header.

KCCA FC took the lead in the 62nd minute, thanks to Tito Okello before new recruit striker Patrick Kaddu took the game beyond reach, seven minutes to the 90th minute.

In Masaka, record league champions SC Villa beat army side UPDF FC two goals to nil, thanks to goals from Allan Kyambadde and Ambrose Kirya.

In Arua, goals by Rashid Toha and Vianney Sekajugo ensured home side Onduparaka FC saw off Soana SC by two goals to nil.

The Saturday games saw Police FC go top of the Azam Uganda Premier League table on 10 points, the same points with second placed Vipers SC, the former having a better goal difference.

Onduparaka FC are third on the log whereas new entrants Masavu are last on the table with only three points after five games.
