The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety is investigating a fatal accident involving two motor vehicles in which eight people died instantly along the Mbarara -Isingiro road.
This accident which happened on Friday night at Mile 17 involved motor vehicle registration number UBG 812K and motor vehicle registration number UBL 945Y Fuso Fighter.
According to police, it is alleged that motor vehicle registration number UBL 945U (Fuso Fighter), which was carrying scrap metals and people, lost control while speeding and failed to break.
It crossed the opposite lane of the oncoming vehicle, colliding with motor vehicle registration number UBG 812K, owned by the Global Bus company, travelling from Mbarara to Isingiro.
“This collision resulted in the instant death of 8 individuals travelling on the Fuso Fighter, while one person on the bus sustained minor injuries,” said traffic spokesperson Michael Kananura.
The victim was taken to a nearby clinic in Isingiro for first aid while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mbarara Referral Hospital for postmortem.
“The primary cause of this accident has been reckless driving by the driver of motor vehicle UBL 945Y Fuso Fighter,” said police.
