Mpigi: Nabbanja orders arrest of district officials over alleged fraud

Two district officials from Mpigi and Gomba have been held for interrogation after presenting inconsistent accounts on road construction work in the two districts.

The decision was reached during a meeting called to discuss the state of roads and other social services in Mpigi, Butambala, and Gomba districts.

This was as Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja together a section of NRM leaders from the secretariat visited and met the local leaders to discuss the state of affairs in these two districts which make up the greater Mpigi area.

During the meeting, Nabbanja and said government had resolved to intensify monitoring and follow-up of the huge sums of money which are annually sent to districts for service delivery, yet little is usually realised.

"It was discovered that the government sent a lot of money to these districts for road construction for example but very few roads of low standards have been constructed," Nabbanja said, noting that that is as a result of employing civil servants that lack patriotism.

She cautioned leaders and civil servants against politicking at the expense of the locals' plight. The prime minister said the government is determined to fight corruption and misuse of its resources to ensure the electorate benefits.

Godfrey Kiwanda, the NRM Vice Chairman for the Central Region, said NRM's poor performance in some areas during the 2021 elections was due to a lack of information by locals on government achievements.

The NRM deputy secretary general, Rose Namayanja Nsereko, said it is not the president or ministers mandate to fulfil campaign pledges. Instead, it is the responsibility of local leadership.

She also asked the leaders to monitor government programs right from the grassroots and also explain to the electorate about the ongoing development programs like the Parish Development Model.
