UCC to confiscate equipment of "defiant" closed radio stations

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has vowed to confiscate the equipment of any radio station that will be found in operation after their license was suspended.

On March 27, 23 radio stations were suspended by UCC for broadcasting programmes related to witchcraft. Two days later, some of them remained on air.

UCC's Uganda Consumer Affairs  Manager,  Ibrahim Bbosa ,said all radio stations that are still operating after the directive of their closure are attracting heavy penalties from UCC like confiscation of  transmitters and total withdraw of licences.

Bbosa said that a UCC team is in the field to find out whether some radios have deliberately refused to switch off their radios.

He  clarified that those radios that were closed breached the Witchcraft Act 1957 and also contravened Article 21 of the UCC Act.
