Nabakooba flags off road works in Kitgum Municipality

The minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Judith Nabakooba, has said Uganda’s support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) programme is aimed at improving the institutional capacity of local governments through improved urban service delivery.

Nabakooba made the remarks while flagging off road works of 2.92km in Kitgum Municipality after it was selected to join the (USMID) programme.

"Kitgum Municipality received Shs 13.59 billion and is expected to receive another Shs 9.23 billion for the (FY2021/22). There has to be efficient and effective management of urban areas to enable them contribute to national development," she said.

Kitgum Municipal Council recently signed a contract with a Chinese firm, China Railway 18 Bureau Group Co Ltd for the construction of seven roads stretching 2.8 kilometres within the municipality.

The first phase of the road construction work is funded by the World Bank through Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID).

The roads expected to be constructed in the first phase are; Janani Luwum, Lakidi, Philip Adonga, Kitgum road, Tom Apila in Central division and Oneka road, and Aya Hellen Dean in Pandwong division.

Kitgum municipality is among eight new municipalities that started benefiting from USD 350 Million World Bank funded project in 2019.
