Lira City Queens Awarded Walkover Win After Gold Star Ladies Fail to Turn Up in FUFA Women Elite League

By | April 6, 2026

Lira City Queens were awarded three points and three goals after their scheduled weekend fixture against Gold Star HS Ladies FC in the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women’s Elite League ended in a walkover.

The Lira-based side had travelled to Amus Stadium in Bukedea expecting a competitive match, but their opponents failed to show up, resulting in a 3–0 victory in accordance with league regulations.

Head coach Richard Opio said the team had prepared thoroughly for a challenging away encounter and was surprised by the turn of events.

“We travelled knowing we were going to face a ready team, but unfortunately, they were not present,” Opio said. He added that the awarded points are vital in their push this season.

The result moves Lira City Queens into second place on the table with nine points from four games. They are level on points with BUL Women FC, who sit third, but Lira have a superior goal difference. Jinja United WFC remain top of the standings with 13 points from five matches.

UCU Lady Cardinals FC are in fourth place with six points, followed by Pabo United WFC with four. Gold Star HS Ladies FC sit sixth with three points but have been penalized with a deduction of points and goals following the no-show.

Ateker WFC and Highway Ladies WFC occupy the bottom positions, each with one point.

The updated standings highlight a tightly contested race at the top, with Lira City Queens firmly in contention despite having played fewer matches than the leaders.

Opio emphasized that the team remains focused and committed to taking each game as it comes.

“We take one game at a time. Now that this one is done—even if it’s a walkover—we shift our focus to preparing for the next,” he said.

Lira City Queens will next host UCU Lady Cardinals FC this weekend in a crucial fixture at their home ground in Lira City, as they aim to build momentum and close the gap on leaders Jinja United WFC.
