The stage is set for a thrilling climax to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 as Morocco and Madagascar face off in the final this Saturday, August 30, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Kenya.
Both teams navigated tense semi-finals to earn their place in what promises to be an electrifying showdown.
For Madagascar, it is the continuation of a remarkable fairytale. On their CHAN debut in 2022, the island nation stunned the continent by finishing third place.
This year, under Coach Romuald Rakotondrabe, the Barea once again defied the odds against Sudan in Dar es Salaam, edging a dramatic 1-0 victory after extra time.
Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe struck in the 116th minute to seal the win, despite Madagascar playing nearly 50 minutes with 10 men following a red card.
“I can’t find the words to express it,” said Rakotondrabe. “We lost players to injury and a sending-off, yet the boys showed character, fought to the end, and won. It’s unbelievable.”
Madagascar had already demonstrated resilience in a challenging group featuring hosts Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and the Central African Republic, collecting seven points to progress. Now, they stand just one step away from their first-ever CHAN title.
On the other side, Morocco, giants of African football, displayed nerves of steel to edge Senegal on penalties in Kampala.
The Atlas Lions fell behind in the 16th minute through Joseph Layousse, but Sabil Bougrine equalized in the 23rd. After a goalless extra time, Morocco prevailed 5-3 in the penalty shootout following Senegal’s Fouad Zahouani missing the opening kick.
Coach Tarek Sektioui’s tactical discipline proved vital as Morocco resisted Senegal’s late pressure.
Saturday’s final brings together two contrasting narratives: Morocco, chasing a record-extending third CHAN crown after back-to-back triumphs in 2018 and 2020, and Madagascar, aiming to write a new chapter in African home-based football just two years after their debut.
For Madagascar, it is a chance to prove their rise is no fluke. For Morocco, it is an opportunity to reassert dominance and extend their legacy as CHAN’s most successful nation.
Kick-off is set for Saturday, August 30, in Nairobi, where African football fans will witness whether Madagascar’s dream continues or Morocco’s experience prevails.
