Golf community pays tribute to late governor Mutebile

The golfing community from all corners of Uganda have come together to honor the memory of the late professor Emmanuel Mutebile, the former governor of the Bank of Uganda.
Mutebile, who passed away on January 23,2022, was an avid golfer and patron of the Kabale sports club.

Golfers from across the country, and abroad gathered at the Kabale sports club for the third edition of the Professor Mutebile Memorial Golf tournament 2025.
The event was sponsored by the Bank of Uganda.
Edger Mashemererwa the chairman Kabale sports club noted that the tournament has helped them much in terms of raising funds that can help in maintain the club highlighting that initially the club was struggling.
Mashemererwa also said that this year has attracted very big number of participants especially from Rwanda and other participants from other parts of the country.
“This is the third edition of Mutebile memorial tournament at Kabale sports club. It happens every year since we lost our dear governor who was also the patron of this club,” Mashemererwa said.
This year, the tournament has attracted close to 138 participants including our brothers and sisters from Rwanda.” Mashemererwa added.
Kenneth Egesa, the director of communications and public relations at Bank of Uganda highlighted the Mutebile’s contributions to the banking sector adding that its important to aways remember him.
He also encouraged golf clubs to bring youth on board to expand participation in the sport.
Col.Rt Stephen Basaliza, a golfer rubbished the thinking of the game of golf being for the rich saying that it’s about being passionate about the game adding that its like other game played in this country.
Basaliza called on government to put more effort in the game of golf
“The purpose is government to make the game of gold important, even different stake holders can support the game. Golf is a game of friendship, fraternity and business connections," Basaliza said.
The participants that included Pauline Komunda and Federrick Oguntu noted that such tournament enables them to interact with different people from different spheres of the world.
They addED that there is need for more females to take part in the game of golf.
The Mutebile memorial tournament was kick started in 2023 and takes shape every year in the month of January.
