NRM Members Clash Over EALA Seats Ahead of Presidential Meeting

By | March 25, 2026

Members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party have clashed over two seats representing Uganda in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The seats became vacant following the election of Denis Namala to represent Buyaga West in Kagadi District and James Kakooza to represent the elderly in the Buganda region in Uganda’s Parliament.

So far, at least 23 individuals have emerged in the contest, including journalist Charles Odongtho, Briton Tigah Kiwanuka, Joseline Kamateneti, the former Ntungamo District Woman MP who lost in the 2026 elections, Stephen Bugingo, who lost the Nakasongola parliamentary seat, and Robert Kato, who failed to secure NRM’s nomination in Kampala, among others.

Addressing the issue, NRM Electoral Committee Chair Tanga Odoi said: “Those wishing to contest must pay a fee of 2 million shillings and submit their academic documents before they can officially participate in the contest.”

The dispute comes ahead of a scheduled meeting between NRM MPs and President and party chairman Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe this Friday, where resolving issues related to filling the EALA positions is expected to be a key agenda item.
