The informal sector workers in Kampala and the surrounding areas have demanded for a ban on political processions and protests in the central business district.
In the meeting that was held at Nakivubo Primary School on Thursday, one of the vendors Patricia Nayebare explained that their request is aimed at preventing risks.
She said damage to their businesses will increase in the run up to the 2021 elections.
"I have come here as a vendor, as a market vendor, as street vendor to speak on behalf of businesses that are going through hell. Government should gazette areas where protests can be carried out so that our businesses are not affected or interrupted," she said.
In a petition to the minister for Kampala Affairs, they called for a ban to protests from the central business district.
Nayebare said:"We are requesting whoever politician, please leave our market premises and we do our work. There is nothing like politics. We have not requested anybody even the minister to intervene. We only called her to come and take our voices to the government,"she said.
The minister for Kampala Beti Kamya said she is ready to deliver the voice of the traders as requested.
“Maybe the people who closed constitutional square had their views. I will deliver the traders petition. They didn’t ask me to think about it. They only asked me to to deliver it,"she said.
