Youth representatives in Parliament have asked the minister of state for the Youth, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi to consider coming up with a bill that will help in managing young talents in Uganda.
The legislators made the suggestion at a press briefing where they had come out to show solidarity to the young musician Fresh Kid, who Nakiwala wants to ban from performing and so that he can concentrate on books.
Last week, Nakiwala banned the now popular young Musician Fresh Kid from performing on stage to allow him concentrate on his studies.
Quoting the Children’s Act, the minister said failure to adhere to her advice will lead to the arrest of Fresh Kid's managers and parents.
This statement generated a debate amongst the public and in Parliament.
Some MPs supported the minister’s advice while others especially the Youth MPs said the minister's directive would stifle young talent.
At a briefing yesterday, the MPs said they will fight tooth and nail to ensure that Fresh Kid's talent flourishes.
Western Youth MP, Mwine Mpaka said he will draft a law that will help to promote the young talents and also compel government to invest in such talents.
In the absence of a law, Mpaka said these young talents might be exploited.
Kasambya county legislator Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, went further and blasted the minister for her stand.
"In fact it is the minister who should apologise to the young musician," he said.
Mbwatekamwa vowed to support the young talent by meeting Fresh Kid's studio costs.
