Bright Muhumuza, National Unity Platform (NUP) regional coordinator for Western Uganda and former Mbarara City South parliamentary candidate, appeared in Mbarara Grade One Magistrates Court on Thursday for the first time since his alleged abduction on January 14, 2026, the eve of the general elections.
Muhumuza appeared before Grade One Magistrate Yafesi Ochieng, where his legal team, including Mordern Atuhuriire, Muhanguzi Honorato, and Isaac Mulindwa Wilbroad Busingye, sought bail pending trial.
“The accused person seeks to apply for bail pending his trial, and we are ready to proceed with the bail application if allowed,” Mulindwa said.
Muhumuza was formally charged with rash and negligent driving contrary to Section 211(a) of the Penal Code Act.
The charge alleges that on November 8, 2025, he drove a motor vehicle, M/V Reg No. UAY Prado, on Kyamugolanyi Road in Mbarara City in a manner likely to cause harm to Senior Police Officer Kenneth Kabwigo Gumisiriza.
The court proceedings were adjourned to February 11, 2026, after Magistrate Ochieng noted the absence of a state representative, stating that it was important to allow the state to participate in the matter.
“It is true the accused has a right to apply for bail, but it is prudent that the state is also given an opportunity to participate. This case will be heard on the 11th of this month at 9m,” Ochieng ruled.
Muhumuza was unable to participate in the 2026 general elections due to his reported abduction, despite being a candidate for Mbarara City South Member of Parliament against incumbent Mwine Mpaka Rwamirama.
Nevertheless, he garnered 5,324 votes, placing second after Mwine Mpaka, who secured 26,399 votes.
