Crime Scene: Detectives Seal Off Among’s Parliamentary Office in Expanding Corruption Probe

In a dramatic escalation of an ongoing multi-agency corruption probe, joint security operatives on Tuesday morning stormed the Parliament of Uganda, sealing off the office of former Speaker Anita Annet Among and declaring it a crime scene.

The high-profile operation follows a series of weekend raids on Among’s private residences, marking a major turning point in investigations targeting one of Uganda’s most influential political figures.

The operation began at around 8:30am when detectives attached to the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Forensics Directorate arrived at Parliament in a convoy of police and unmarked security vehicles.

After assembling in the basement parking area, the operatives proceeded through mandatory security screening before advancing toward the North Wing of Parliament, where the Speaker’s offices are located.

Detectives later took control of Level 5, ordering parliamentary staff away from the area before sealing off Among’s office suite using yellow “CRIME SCENE” tape and warning placards.

Forensic experts were seen conducting detailed examinations inside the offices, dusting for fingerprints and inspecting furniture, safes and electronic devices for potential evidence.

The operation also extended to the office of the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, as well as offices of senior financial officials, where investigators reportedly examined administrative and financial records.

About an hour into the search, Among’s lead lawyer, Caleb Alaka, arrived at Parliament and proceeded directly to the restricted area.

“We are moving,” Alaka briefly told reporters. “We shall issue an official statement later.”

The latest developments come amid a widening state investigation into allegations of illicit enrichment, abuse of office and money laundering involving senior government officials.

Over the weekend, joint security teams reportedly raided several properties linked to Among in Kampala and Wakiso districts, including residences in Nakasero, Ntinda and Mutungo-Kigo.

During the searches, investigators allegedly impounded several high-end vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce and multiple Range Rovers, which were taken to Naguru Police Headquarters as exhibits in the ongoing investigations.

The political fallout from the probe has already begun reshaping the succession race for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament.

Days after reportedly losing endorsement from the Patriotic League of Uganda, Among announced that she would not contest for the Speakership, saying her decision was intended to preserve harmony within the ruling National Resistance Movement.

As forensic teams continue their search operations at Parliament, uncertainty continues to grow over the political future of the Bukedea Woman MP, with authorities signaling that investigations into alleged corruption and abuse of office are far from over.
