A 42-year-old woman has died following a violent domestic altercation with her husband in Mubende District, in a case that has renewed concern over rising incidents of domestic violence in communities.
The deceased, identified as Evas Turyahikayo, a peasant from Budibaga East LC1 in Kalonga Sub-county, reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained during a fight with her husband, Robert Karahakye, a 38-year-old butcher.
According to residents, the couple had a history of frequent quarrels, often over minor domestic disagreements. The situation reportedly escalated on April 13, 2026, at around 4:00 PM, when a confrontation turned violent.
Neighbours said the suspect allegedly assaulted his wife severely, leaving her unconscious, before attempting to flee the scene.
“By the time we arrived, she was already lifeless. We had been hearing their fights for a long time, but this one turned tragic,” one resident said.
Angry residents reportedly attempted to lynch the suspect, but local leaders intervened and handed him over to police at Kalonga Police Station.
The Uganda Police Force in the Wamala region confirmed the incident, saying a murder case has been opened against the suspect.
“The suspect is currently in custody, and a murder charge has been preferred against him. Statements from witnesses have been recorded to aid investigations,” said SSP Lameck Kigozi, the regional police spokesperson.
A homicide team from Mubende visited the scene, documented evidence, and processed it before transferring the body to Mubende Hospital for postmortem examination.
Police condemned the incident and urged couples to seek peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms.
“We urge couples to exercise patience and tolerance. Where conflicts become overwhelming, it is better to seek mediation or temporarily separate rather than resort to violence,” SSP Kigozi said.
Investigations are ongoing as the suspect awaits court proceedings, while the incident has left the community in shock and renewed calls for stronger action against domestic violence.
