The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed Sudan’s decision to resume full participation in the regional bloc, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening regional unity and cooperation.
In a statement issued on Monday from its headquarters in Djibouti, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr Workneh Gebeyehu said Sudan’s return signals a renewed commitment to collective peace and stability across the Horn of Africa and neighbouring regions.
“Sudan’s return is a reaffirmation of regional solidarity and collective commitment to peace, stability and cooperation across the region,” Dr Workneh said, noting that Sudan is a founding member of IGAD and plays a critical role in advancing the organisation’s core objectives.
He added that Sudan’s renewed engagement strengthens IGAD’s unity and enhances its capacity to address shared regional priorities at a time when the region is facing complex security, political and humanitarian challenges.
The Executive Secretary also expressed appreciation to Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, the current Chair of IGAD, for his role in facilitating Sudan’s return to the bloc.
Dr Workneh commended President Guelleh’s leadership and commitment to dialogue and consensus-building, emphasising the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement in promoting regional cohesion.
IGAD reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with Sudan in addressing ongoing challenges and advancing peace and development efforts.
“The Secretariat stands ready to work closely with the Republic of the Sudan in advancing a peaceful resolution of the current challenges and in supporting a secure and prosperous future for the Sudanese people and the wider region,” the statement said.
Sudan’s return is expected to strengthen IGAD’s role in mediating regional conflicts and deepening cooperation among its member states.
