The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has recovered more than 30 head of cattle following a targeted security operation conducted across parts of East Acholi, in a move aimed at disrupting renewed cattle rustling and restoring community safety.
The operation, executed under the broader security campaign codenamed Dumisha Usalama, was carried out between February 2 and February 4, 2026, covering areas of Lokokwai in Kitgum District, Amita Village in Abim District, and Loborom Village in Agago District.
Security officials say the coordinated deployment was informed by intelligence on suspected movements of armed rustlers operating along the Acholi–Karamoja corridor.
During the three-day exercise, UPDF troops engaged suspected rustlers, resulting in the neutralisation of four armed Karamojong warriors.
The forces also recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with three rounds of ammunition, alongside traditional weapons including bows and arrows. Three mobile phones believed to belong to the suspects were also seized and are expected to aid ongoing intelligence analysis.
The Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, Major General Keith Katungyi, reassured communities within the division’s area of responsibility that sustained operations will continue to prevent livestock theft and other forms of insecurity.
He emphasised that heightened vigilance and rapid deployment capabilities have helped ensure that livestock in the affected areas was secured without reported losses during the operation period.
The operation forms part of wider UPDF and inter-agency efforts to stabilise northern Uganda and neighbouring regions that have historically faced cattle rustling challenges, often linked to armed groups operating across district and regional boundaries.
UPDF leadership has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in East Acholi, noting that security operations will remain active to deter criminal elements and protect livelihoods that depend heavily on livestock.
