The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially declared Nakawa West MP Ronald Balimwezo as its flagbearer for the position of Kampala Lord Mayor in the 2026 elections.

The declaration was made on Friday when NUP released a list of successful candidates at district electoral levels.

Balimwezo will now represent the party on the ballot for the city’s top political seat.

The development comes weeks after he was named head of the NUP fundraising campaign for the “Protest Vote 2026.”

Balimwezo recently confirmed he would not return to Parliament, where he has served as MP for Nakawa West since 2021.

Instead, he chose to contest for the Lord Mayor’s office, a position currently held by Elias Lukwago, who has dominated the seat for many years.

Before entering national politics, Ronald Balimwezo served as Mayor of Nakawa Division under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

He gained a reputation for being outspoken on issues of governance, service delivery, and the rights of city dwellers.

In 2020, he crossed to NUP, joining Robert Kyagulanyi’s (Bobi Wine’s) movement, and successfully contested as MP for Nakawa
