Empowering Refugees and Host Communities: The Impact of the REAL Project in Uganda
In Uganda’s Kyaka and Rwamwanja refugee settlements, the ADRA Uganda’s REAL project is transforming lives by promoting food security, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods for both refugees and host communities.

In the heart of Kyaka and Rwamwanja refugee settlements in Kyegegwa District, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Uganda is changing lives through the Resilient, Empowered, and Adapted Livelihoods (REAL) project.

This two-year initiative, funded by DANIDA and the people of Denmark in partnership with Novo Nordisk and the FAHU Foundation, has made a profound impact on both refugee and host communities.

The REAL project focuses on strengthening food security, nutrition, and community resilience. ADRA Uganda works with 35 groups—25 refugee groups and 10 from the host community—empowering them with tools and knowledge for a sustainable future.

According to Faridah Nakato, monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) officer at ADRA Uganda, the project promotes smart climate agriculture, including vegetable gardening, goat rearing, and other climate-smart farming practices.
