ULS Petitions Equal Opportunities Commission Over Expulsion of Pregnant Student

By | June 12, 2025

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has written to the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), urging urgent intervention in the case of Namukisa Sarah, a final-year student at the Medical Laboratory Training School in Jinja, who was discontinued from the institution over her pregnancy.

According to a letter dated 10 June 2025 and signed by ULS Vice President Asiimwe Anthony, Namukisa was dismissed from the institution for allegedly violating Regulation No. 13 of the school’s rules, which prohibit pregnancy among enrolled students.

The school’s decision was communicated in a letter dated 7 May 2025, and effectively bars her from sitting final exams scheduled for Friday, 13 June 2025.

ULS described the action as discriminatory and in violation of constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination.

“This action also infringes upon her right to education, which is to be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their health status,” the letter reads in part.

In their petition, ULS invoked sections 14 and 15 of the Equal Opportunities Commission Act (Cap 7), requesting an urgent injunction to halt the enforcement of the expulsion and allow Namukisa to sit for her final examinations.

The Law Society also pledged full support to ensure the matter is handled with urgency and Namukisa’s rights are upheld.

There was no immediate response from the Equal Opportunities Commission or the Medical Laboratory Training School Jinja by press time.
