The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has joined millions of people around the world to mourn the death of Pope Francis.

The Vatican on Easter Monday pronounced the Pope dead.

In her condolence message, Among said the world has lost a devoted spiritual shepherd, committed to his faith and to the mission of uniting the Church throughout the world.

“Pope Francis was passionate about social justice and world peace. He boldly advocated for religious tolerance and forgiveness among the faithful in the Universal Church,” Among said.

Amon on several occasions met with the Pope in Vatican and the most recent one came in November 2024 where her family was blessed by the Pontiff.

In the August, 2023 private meeting , the Pope commended the Ugandan parliament for protecting family values by passing the Anti Homosexuality Bill.

“I thank you Parliament and the people of Uganda for upholding family values. The family is the rock on which society stands,” Pope Francis is quoted to have said.

According to the speaker, the passing of Pope Francis, occurring after the holy week is “ a true testament to the divine grace in which his mission and vocation were rooted.”

“The Parliament of Uganda and I join in prayer for the Catholic Church and all Christian believers. Eternal peace grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. “
