You're not judges' - Otafiire warns enforcement officers against misusing authority

Internal Affairs minister, Kahinda Otafiire, has warned law enforcement personnel against inflicting brutality on Ugandans in the name of "order".

He issued this warning on Friday during the inauguration of the Crime Data Analysis Centre at the Crime Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters in Kibuli.

The event marked a significant milestone with the opening of the first seven-story CID building since the 1930s, constructed by Ugandans for Ugandans.

As the chief guest, Otafiire urged law enforcement officers to prioritise upholding the law rather than resorting to violence against citizens.

"Being a law enforcement officer does not grant you the right to break bodies or commit crimes in the name of order," Otafiire said.

"Your job is to ensure the laws passed by Parliament are followed-nothing more, nothing less. You are not judges. You are not executioners." he added.

The newly established Crime Data Analysis Centre is designed to improve crime analysis and investigative capabilities, supporting the police force's commitment to enhancing national security.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, AIGP Tom Magambo, the director of CID, expressed pride in the fact that this facility, unlike the colonial-era buildings in the area, is a product of Ugandan ingenuity, designed, built, and maintained by Ugandans.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era, the first seven-story CID building since the 1930s, built by Ugandans for Ugandans. CID is not just a department; we are part of a justice chain. Together with our partners, we build stronger systems for our citizens," Magambo remarked.

"Future generations will look back and appreciate that we, the generation of this time, contributed meaningfully," he added.
