The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged the Ugandan government to increase funding for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention programs following the withdrawal of U.S. donor support.
He made the remarks while launching the 12th edition of the Kabaka’s Birthday Run at Bulange, Mengo, ahead of the Kabaka’s 70th birthday celebrations.
This year’s run, scheduled for April 6, will take place under the theme “Men in the fight against HIV/AIDS, to save a girl child.”
Katikkiro Mayiga emphasized the urgency of government intervention, warning that Uganda’s HIV treatment programs are at risk following the U.S. government’s decision to cut financial assistance, which previously covered 68% of the country’s HIV/AIDS funding.
He stressed that investing in health must be a priority to prevent a potential crisis.
He also urged young people to take personal responsibility for protecting themselves from HIV by embracing circumcision, using protection, regularly testing for the virus, and staying in school.
UNAIDS representative Sarah Nakku echoed the Katikkiro’s concerns, warning that the withdrawal of U.S. funding has left a significant gap in Uganda’s HIV/AIDS response. She called on local stakeholders to step up efforts to ensure continued access to treatment and prevention services.
Buganda’s Minister for Youth, Sports, and Talent Development, Owek. Robert Sserwanga, and Chairperson of the Kabaka’s Birthday Run organizing committee, Twaha Kaawaase, encouraged Ugandans to participate by purchasing the birthday kits and taking part in the run.
The Kabaka’s Birthday Run is one of the key activities leading up to the official birthday celebrations of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II on April 13.
The event is expected to attract thousands of participants from across the country, reinforcing the kingdom’s commitment to public health and community welfare.
