Youth have been urged to uphold discipline, respect their elders, and actively engage in church and community activities as a foundation for building responsible citizenship and a better future.
The call was made during Youth Day celebrations at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Kimanya, within the Catholic Diocese of Masaka.
The event began with Holy Mass led by the parish priest, Rev Fr Simon Peter Zikusoka, and attracted hundreds of young people from different church groups.
The Deputy Coordinator in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Ronald Sseggawa, attended as chief guest.
Speaking during the celebrations, Dr Sseggawa expressed concern over what he described as growing indiscipline among some young people, particularly a tendency to disrespect elders.
“It is unfortunate that some youths today no longer respect older people. Respect is a virtue that every young person should uphold if they are to become responsible citizens,” he said.
He reminded the youth that they remain a key resource for both families and the country, urging them to use their time productively and make responsible life choices.
“Youth are the backbone of our nation. Use your time wisely, work hard, and make decisions today that you will be proud of in the future instead of regretting them when you grow older,” he added.
Rev. Fr. Zikusoka called on young people to take a more active role in church life, saying they form both the present and future of the Church.
“The youth are not only the Church of tomorrow but also the Church of today. They should use their youthful years to serve God and participate fully in church activities,” he said.
He further cautioned them against behaviours that contradict Christian teachings.
“Avoid actions that weaken your faith and compromise your Christian values. Remain focused on living according to the teachings of the Church,” he advised.
The Parish Youth Leader and Deanery Youth Leader, Prince Henry Jjuko, also encouraged young people to commit themselves to serving God through active participation in church programs.
“When young people actively participate in church programs and serve God faithfully, they receive guidance and blessings that help them succeed in life,” he said.
The Youth Day celebrations focused on promoting moral values, spiritual growth, and responsible citizenship among young people, drawing participation from hundreds across the parish and surrounding communities.
