The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has urged training institutions to emphasise holistic development to ensure graduates emerge as well-rounded professionals.

Speaking during the unveiling of the 6th cohort of the ICPAU Student Scholarship Programme in Kampala, the Institute highlighted the need for training beyond the classroom, encouraging trainees to gain professional experience and practical skills.

Mr. Ronald Mutumba, Vice President of ICPAU, reiterated the Institute’s commitment to transforming communities and building highly skilled professionals within the accounting sector.

“We have a duty to transform our societies and communities for the benefit of all. As accountants, our mandate goes beyond passing exams; it is about providing quality training and equipping professionals with practical skills to create meaningful impact,” said Mutumba.

He emphasized the pivotal role accountants play in driving organisational success and societal development, urging students to dedicate themselves to hard work, thorough preparation, and staying informed about developments in the business and economic sectors.

“Your success will depend on your hard work and adequate preparation for examinations. The CPA examinations are not a walkover. To excel, you need to combine three key things: hard work, extensive academic preparation, and awareness of developments in the business and economic environment,” he stated.

Mutumba also underscored the importance of extensive reading and continuous learning, given the dynamic nature of the accountancy profession, which demands knowledge of regulatory compliance and economic changes.

“The accounting profession serves the public interest, particularly in the ever-changing business and economic fields. You must be aware of these developments and apply them in your studies,” he added.

He encouraged students to leverage ICPAU resources such as student engagement webinars and other learning programs to enhance their academic journey.

Acknowledging the challenges students may face, Mutumba urged resilience. “Along the way, you might fall. But every time you fail, pick yourself up quickly, attack afresh, and keep going,” he advised.

Highlighting the benefits of obtaining the CPA qualification, he noted that it opens doors to ICPAU membership, boosting professional credibility and creating opportunities for career advancement.

“Having the CPA qualification will make you eligible for ICPAU membership. This membership will enhance your professional profile and offer you opportunities for growth and leadership,” Mutumba explained.

The ICPAU Student Scholarship Programme continues to equip aspiring accountants with the skills and resources necessary to thrive in the dynamic accounting field.
